My wedding on Long Beach Island

Updated: Apr 16, 2019

It was the end of a beautiful summer in 2003. After much planning and anticipation my fiancee of two years and I were finally getting married. Beautiful Long Beach Island was the ideal spot.

We had everything planned - our vacation home was rented in Loveladies, catering was arranged through Kubel's Too, the wedding cake ordered at The Big Apple Bakery, flowers arranged by Lily in the Valley florist, and the location scouted at Harvey Cedars Sunset Park. Though Long Beach Island boasts a wide array of very talented photographers, we were lucky enough to have a family friend from New York City join us to do the honors and capture my wife in her gorgeous dress. The rental car was ready to sweep us away to begin our new lives together - we thought of everything.

Until the unexpected happened. Hurricane Isabelle was rolling in. How could this happen? Was this a sign from the Gods? After all of our efforts to create a day to remember, we ended up with a day impossible to forget!

On the morning of our ceremony the storm was heading straight for us and our idea of a picturesque wedding on the bay was sure to be washed out. What were we to do with only hours left?

I already knew how strong and determined my fiancee was, one of the reasons I had fallen in love with her in the first place, but seeing her scramble to improvise what was supposed to be the most joyous day of our lives was a sight to behold. Everything needed to be changed and there were only a few hours left to pull it off. Not only did all the guests need to be notified but where were we to join hands? Lucky for us, the wonderful Ladies at Harvey Cedars Municipal Hall jumped at the opportunity to save our wedding day and before we knew what was happening, we were dragging chairs around the court room, covering tables with table cloths they found for us in closets, decorating and setting up the room for our ceremony.

At first we felt the situation was grossly unfair but as we tackled our first life challenge together we began to realize that we made a perfect team.

After all we went through that day, we left as partners for life and vowed that no matter how much we prepare for our next adventure, remember to check the weather!
